Sustainability

The Escape Key supports initiatives and acts where it can to reduce its carbon footprint and help fight climate change.
We are small business located in a Victorian era warehouse. The nature of the building does pose challenges for sustainability particularly with heating in winter and cooling in the summer. There is no mains gas supply or central heating so heating and cooling are provided by portable appliances.
At the Escape Key we are always looking for new ways to champion regenerative tourism.
We as an employer actively encourage employees of The Escape Key Ltd, to walk, cycle and use public transport on their journeys too and from work of which around 90% do (excluding those with accessibility requirements).
All plastic, metal, glass and paper produced or bought into the venue is recycled, re-used or repurposed.
All communications with customers are paperless, reducing ink and paper usage. Customers are also reminded that they don’t need to print their tickets. Safety waivers are done through QR codes
We use rechargeable batteries in torches and other in game items. Where possible battery operated devices have been converted to run off low voltage electricity supply. Cable ties – used to tie up prisoners in the Witch game are reusable helping us cut down on plastic waste.
No disposable cups or plates are used in the staff kitchen and signage reminds staff to save energy for example only filling the kettle with the amount needed.
As an Escape room we frequently buy pre-loved and second hand items, from clothing and books, to pennies and furniture, many parts of our games and rooms come from recyclable or reused materials.
Our Escape rooms are based on the local area of Newcastle City Centre or more specifically the areas between St Andrews Church and Central station.
Over the past 8 years we have built several long lasting relationships with many small business owners from the surrounding area, we frequent and use their services often, for example:
-
Rosie’s Bar hosts our Corporate events in their function room and we in return promote them to our customers.
-
David Harvey for beauty treatments- Next door to our business meaning our employees need not travel elsewhere for services, we offer a mutual discount between companies.
-
Metro Repro- Printing services. A local company based in Carliol Square we correspond with them via email to order things like, leaflets, posters, flyers and then we collect in person.
-
ASL Locksmithing another local business based on Leazes Park road, As an escape room we go through many keys and padlocks, especially vintage or alternative locks, because of this our relationship with ASL has grown over the years, they have worked with us to source many rare Keys and locks, we frequently use them for key copying.
-
We are also incredibly lucky to have business relations with Newcastle arms, Geordie Witch, Travelling man, Tyneside Cinema and more who we have cross promotion relationships with, we often host team building events with these companies.
-
The Cosy Dove and The North Terrace Both based in Spittal Tongues, where we regularly sponsor ‘Pub’ Quizzes.
